Weather News for Monday June 29th 2009 - updated  by noon

updated June 29 2pm...
Special Weather Statement Issued by Environment Canada
A weather disturbance termed by meteorologists as a cold low has
arrived over the Great Lakes and is responsible for the unsettled
showery weather today. Scattered thunderstorms will affect parts of
southern Ontario this afternoon into this evening. A few of these
storms may briefly produce 1 to 2 centimetre hail and gusty winds to
70 or 80 km/h.

Conditions are also favourable for the development of funnel clouds
this afternoon and this evening. These types of funnel clouds form
out of large cumulus clouds or weak thunderstorms and normally do not
have enough energy to reach the ground.

However there is a risk that one of these funnels may briefly touch
down as a weak tornado and become destructive over a very small area.
Treat all funnel clouds and tornadoes seriously and avoid when
possible. Should one develop overhead, take shelter until it
dissipates. Remember, these funnel clouds will normally appear with
little or no warning.

The thunderstorm activity will gradually diminish this evening as
heating from the late June sun wanes.

Updated June 29 11am....  Summer is put on hold.

It appears that summer weather is going on a vacation for this week as unsettled and cool conditions will dominate. Increasing clouds across the Golden Horseshoe will spark some showers and some scattered thunderstorms later in the day. There is the chance of some of these thunderstorms becoming severe later in the day with the main threat being some small hail and gusty winds to 90km/h.

The jet stream will stay south of the regions for this week and this will keep warm air from moving northwwards into Southern Ontario. Temperatures will hover into the low 20's for much of the work week. There is a cold pool of air aloft and this is the reason for the showes and thunderstorm development each day this week. As the ground heats up and warm air rises, it enters into the cool layer of air above and condenses. As the warmer air continues to rise, clouds become convective in nature and begin to from showers and evenetually thundershowers.
